Here Are Your Essential Moving Day Tips

Changing homes can be overwhelming, and much of the process can be both mentally and physically straining. However, it doesn’t have to be.

Moving can be fun if you organize and prepare yourself beforehand, which gives you the chance to focus more on the excitement of a new place instead of worrying about the move itself. To prepare to move, you should ideally:

  • Create a to-do list.
  • Wake up early and eat breakfast.
  • Prepare lunch and dinner.
  • Have everything ready to be relocated.

Below, we’ll discuss these moving tips and more, so you can enjoy your moving day and avoid unnecessary stress.

Create a To-Do List

A to-do list is essential for moving day. It helps you plan out the day and keeps you organized so you don’t waste time scrambling around figuring out what needs to be done next.

Furthermore, checking tasks off a list gives you a sense of accomplishment. Moving days are long, and these small wins will help you stay positive.

Wake Up Early and Have a Full Breakfast

Breakfast gives you energy for the long hours ahead. On moving day, try to get up early and eat a full meal. We recommend eating something healthy and substantial enough to last until lunch. Your day will require all your energy, so a proper breakfast is a must.

Wear Appropriate Clothing

It’s important to consider the clothes you wear for moving around and carrying furniture and boxes. Wear something comfortable that you can move in freely and ensure it isn’t so loose that it becomes a hazard. Items that are too tight will make you uncomfortable and can rip. Clothing that is too loose leaves you susceptible to falls or getting stuck on doorknobs and haphazard furniture.

Check the weather and dress accordingly. If you have a winter move, bundle up, or grab a raincoat if the forecast calls for rain.

Set Personal Items and Essentials Aside

You will need immediate access to some items during or immediately after the move. These items include documents, medication, jewelry, phone chargers, etc. Pack them separately and move them first. Then, unload them in an easily accessible area.

Have Your Cleaning Supplies Ready

Moving can be messy. You don’t want to give dirt and dust time to settle into your new home. Pack all your cleaning supplies together in a box. This way, if you need to sweep or wipe down surfaces immediately after arrival, you can do so with ease.

Don’t Have the Utilities Turned off on Moving Day

Don’t arrange to have the utilities at your old home turned off until after you’ve moved out. The move may last into the evening, and carrying things around in the dark can be dangerous. Therefore, wait until you’ve moved the last box out before turning the utilities off.

Ensure You Have Enough Cash

Having money on hand is convenient and often a necessity on moving day. Whether you move on your own or hire a moving company, you’ll likely need cash at some point. Calculate how much you expect to spend on gas, food, drinks, etc., a few days beforehand. Running to the ATM in the middle of the day can be time-consuming and stressful.

Prepare Food, Drinks, and First-Aid Kits

No matter how big a breakfast you have, you’ll probably get hungry and thirsty during the day. Prepare food and drinks ahead of time or find a good delivery place. Also, make sure to drink plenty of water; carrying a bottle with you keeps you hydrated. Moving is tiring, and the last thing you need is to have your energy flag.

Furthermore, it’s a good idea to have a small first aid kit on hand with bandages and medicines in case of an injury.

Do a Thorough Walkthrough

After you’ve moved everything out of your old home, do a final walkthrough. Open and close cabinets, drawers, and closets to ensure you don’t forget anything.
