How to Declutter Before You Move

Macho Movers • January 5, 2022

Having less stuff to deal with before your move will make the process easier, more organized, and put less stress on you. Your new residence is meant to be a fresh start for you, so why carry over some items that made your previous home feel overstuffed and cluttered? A more minimalist approach to decorating your new home will leave it looking much tidier. It will also make maintenance much more manageable.

If you want to know the basics of how to declutter your home before you move, we invite you to continue reading this article as we have some useful tips for your convenience.

Give Yourself Time

Time is going to be your best tool during this entire move. The earlier you plan and organize, the better prepared you will be for when the movers arrive to pack your belongings.

For example, start planning which items you intend to keep and which ones are going to be tossed out. Try doing this at least two weeks in advance.

Each day, set aside a few hours to work on decluttering a different room or storage space in your home. By taking on this task gradually, you will not be tempted to just toss everything in boxes and call it a day.

Start a Necessities Box

Consider filling a box with all your necessities for the big moving day. Set aside any items you know you will need quick and easy access to on the day you arrive at your new home. These items may include a set of clean clothes, toiletries, and tools for unpacking boxes.

Leave the Mementos for Last

Decluttering also means some harder decisions will have to be made, such as whether or not to keep certain things of sentimental value. Make the easier decisions first, such as whether or not to keep a set of towels or cutlery. Then you can tackle the more difficult decisions in terms of parting with some sentimental items.

Use the 3-Box Decluttering Trick

Another excellent decluttering tip that will help the moving process is to utilize the 3-box method. It is pretty simple and the first step is to lay out three labelled bins: one for keeping items, one for donating or selling them, and one for anything you wish to discard. This method allows you to stay organized and gives you a clearer picture of how much unnecessary stuff you were holding on to.

Check Expiration Dates

It is common to forget about certain food items in our pantry and fridge.

We probably do not use certain dried herbs and spices often enough, and over time they lose their flavour potency, so it is probably best to discard them before you move. In addition, make sure you toss any old or expired condiments left in your fridge.

Another thing people seem to hoard is countless sauce packets from various restaurant take-out orders. There is no real point in keeping them, and they only create more clutter in your kitchen drawers. Toss them out and make way for a cleaner, more organized, and more minimalist approach to your kitchen.
