Top 5 Tips On Downsizing

Do you live in a large home or are you struggling to cover the maintenance costs? Are you worried about your finances as a result? Provided you have answered ‘yes’ to either one of these two questions, you’ve arrived at the perfect place.

Downsizing is an option to consider, as it will relieve the burden you have been experiencing. Once you will move into a smaller home, you will no longer have to worry about utilities and other associated costs. As we are well aware of how exhausting it can be to go through this process, we have gathered some useful tips for you to follow.

When is a good time to downsize your home? Just take a look at your current situation, and you will have your answer. If you feel overwhelmed, both financially and mentally, it might be high time to consider this move.

1. Organize a list with everything you own

As you move into a home that has considerably less square footage, you’ll need to decide what stays and goes. You can begin by organizing a list and splitting your belongings into categories: keep, throw out, donate and sell.

This might seem like a challenging task — but it is worth it, as it will make the whole move so much easier. You can complete one room at a time, at your own pace. If you’re looking to de-clutter as well, this is the way to go.

2. Time to sell what you don’t need

Once you have your list completed, it’s time to sell the items you no longer need. Remember that these are only physical things, making it pointless to keep these items when you don’t have enough space or use for them.

Depending on how much free time you have, you can organize a yard sale and sell various items — such as power tools, clothing, garden equipment, toys, or even furniture. Selling items online is also a good option and there are plenty of sites to visit.

3. Make a donation

You might have a lot of items that are still useful, but not enough space in your new home for them. You can donate these to charitable organizations, as well as help other people who are in need.

If you’re wondering how to declutter and downsize, making donations is another great way to lighten your load. You can give away books, furniture, clothes, or other items that occupy a lot of space.

4. Keep just one of everything

A quick look in your kitchen might reveal that you have a lot of duplicates, especially when it comes to cooking utensils. If you don’t have guests coming over regularly, you do not need that many items.

You might also want to take a look in your pantry, as well as throw away expired food products, spices and other items that you’re no longer using. When you’re done, you might be surprised at how much you have cleared.

5. Rent storage space

If you can’t decide what to do with the extra stuff right away, it might be a good idea to rent storage space. There, you can deposit everything you are not currently using, or items you are planning on giving away or selling.

Renting storage space is no longer expensive — and it can help relieve a lot of stress. Once you’ve organized your new home, you can decide what to do with the rest of your belongings. It should be easier to decide at that point.
