  Our Go-To Moving Checklist

Many people dread the process of moving to a new home. Moving out is tough, but you can make it less stressful. Use our ultimate moving out checklist to make the process easier. Our list features a timeline that allows you to start planning 8 weeks prior to your move. Check it out.

7- 8 Weeks Before the Move

Keep track of everything related to the move. The best way to do this is to create a folder and keep receipts, pictures, quotes, and notes related to the move in one place. Upload these to your cloud storage so you can easily refer to them as needed.

Research professional moving companies. Find at least 3 that meet your estimated budget and contact them. Ensure that the company is licensed and has some experience. You wouldn’t want to be leaving your belongings to a company you don’t trust.

Request time off work for your moving day. Schedule the move for a Friday so that you can have the weekend to organize your new home.

Choose a school for your kids and inform their current school of the relocation.

5- 6 Weeks Before the Move

This is the time to create your last memories with your friends and neighbours in your current neighbourhood. You can throw a simple party and use the opportunity to tell them about the move.

Take advantage of online packing hacks on how to move to make your move easier. One hack is to label your boxes. You can label them according to rooms or item categorization. Separate fragile moving boxes.

If you are required to perform repairs before moving out, this is the best time to do so.

3- 4 Weeks Before the Move

Research and buy moving insurance to protect your possessions.

Find out if you will need a parking permit on moving day.

Donate or sell items you can’t pack.

Put all your important documents together. This will be part of the luggage you will carry during the move.

Choose a cable and internet provider for your new home. Get in touch with them and schedule an installation date.

If you have pets, visit the local vet for necessary records and medications. Get ID tags for your pets.

1- 2 Weeks Before the Move

Properly dispose of toxic, flammable, or corrosive items.

Return items you have borrowed from friends and neighbours. Visit your local gym, yoga studio, or any other club you were part of to clean out your locker. Also, cancel your subscriptions with these clubs.

Back up your computers. If you have a hard time setting up technological devices, take a picture of the current setup.

Prepare a list of service providers (plumbers, electricians, mechanics, etc.) in your new neighbourhood.

Change your address with your banks, credit card companies, Amazon, employer, and loan providers. If you receive monthly newspapers or have magazine subscriptions, update them with your new address.

Forward your mail to your new home.

Clean your old home for the new residents.

Prepare your fridge, washing machine, lawnmowers, snow and leaf blowers, heaters, and grills for the move.

Moving Day

On moving day, wake up early and make sure you are ready before the moving trucks come.

Crosscheck to see if you have exhausted all items on your moving list.
