After the Move: Hosting a Memorable Housewarming Party

October 27, 2020

Congratulations — the hard part is over! Now that you’re moved in and settled into your new house, it’s time to make it a home by hosting a memorable housewarming party. To help make sure that your housewarming party is one to remember, we’ve created this guide to help.

Planning

While not as fun as the party itself, planning, like in moving, is the most important step in making sure your housewarming party is memorable for all the right reasons.

Before you can even look into making a guest list or sending invitations, you’ll need to decide on a theme. Your theme will decide your colour scheme and decorations. From there, you can begin working on creating your guest list and creating invites that match your theme to send out.

From there, you might want to think about what kind of food and drinks you’ll want to serve. If you plan on the party lasting a while, you may want to think about a larger meal. For shorter parties, hor d’oeuvres may be best.

You’ll also need to choose whether or not to serve alcoholic beverages — and, if so, which kind. Serving alcoholic beverages will come with a great amount of responsibility, so you may want to choose soft drinks and water instead, especially if young adults and children will be present.

During the Event

Once the sections of the event that need a large amount of preparation have been planned, you can move onto the fun stuff — the party itself! For this, you’ll want to decide how your party is going to work.

One thing you’ll want to consider is whether or not you’ll be expecting home gifts. This is something that should be announced in advance, preferably alongside invitations. In order to help, you can create a registry in order to let people know what you’re needing to make your new house feel like home. You’ll also need to designate an area for gifts to help the party run smoothly.

If you’re not expecting gifts, this should also be announced. While some people may try to bring them regardless, announcing it will help reduce any awkward or confrontational situations.

Spicing Things Up

You’ll also want to consider games!

This is a great option for longer events or parties with close friends and families. Games can help keep the fun going to prevent the party from becoming boring.

Fun games include things such as trivia, word unscrambles or even scavenger hunts, if you feel comfortable with your guests roaming your home. You can even make the game home-themed to add to the housewarming atmosphere. These games aren’t only just a good way to make your guests feel comfortable and to ensure they have a good time — they also give you the chance to show off your new home.

You can also do “white elephant” and other related games to give back to your guests. While the main objective of the party is to show off your home, you can also use this time to show your appreciation for your support system. Small trinkets and useful household items make great goodie bags that your guests can compete for extra fun.

Final Thoughts

There’s no better way to make your new house really feel like home than by sharing some of your first moments with your loved ones. Housewarming parties are a fun way to spend time with your friends, families and even neighbours while also settling into your new home.

And while we may not be able to hold gatherings like we’re used to right now, there’s certainly no harm in planning for the ultimate party when it’s safe to do so again!
