How To Minimize Mistakes When Assembling Furniture

March 24, 2020

We’ve all been there, sitting on the floor with that flat-packed box of furniture staring you square in the eyes. For many of us who are not the DIY type, we struggle to complete this task, get frustrated and just end up calling our “Ikea expert”. Even if you are an adept builder, these assemblies can still manage to throw you a curveball.

Here at Macho Movers, we have put together some useful tips for
furniture delivery and assembly . Even if furniture building is not your cup of tea, we encourage you to give it a go with these pointers in mind. If all else fails, we are only a phone call away and are happy to offer an extra and help make your furniture building nightmare disappear.

Be Prepared

One of the best ways you can avoid a problem right out of the gate is to think well about the furniture you are purchasing before you get it home. This means taking your measurements, checking prices and options and ensuring to clear any space ahead of time, allowing you with adequate room to work. Most DIY furniture comes with the required tools (such as an Allen key), but collecting a few extra tools can make the project that much easier. Grab a few screwdrivers, equip yourself with a pair of pliers and a hammer and you’ll thank yourself later.

Follow the Instructions

Even if you don’t want to do it, reading the instruction manual will make your life a whole lot easier when it comes to furniture assembly. This can even help with projects as simple as ‘patio furniture no assembly required’, as even with packages like these, we know things are not always as simple as they sound.

Read the instructions, understand the sequence and make sure you’ve received all necessary pieces and components. If your materials are not complete or if something is damaged, contact the store or manufacturer right away. Even if your ego doesn’t agree, you will be glad you read the instructions — as it makes for a far easier and faster assembly.

Take Your Time & Take Care

Don’t rush! You are far more likely to make mistakes and damage pieces by trying to hurry the process. Unpack the assembly fully, lay all the pieces out and make sure you have the necessary tools on hand. There are also a few additional measures you can take while building to reduce any possible damage to the individual pieces themselves.

Before hammering in any nails, it can help to place a piece of masking tape over the nails location to prevent the wood from splitting (and remove afterward). A rubber mallet is also a better choice for installing dowels, as opposed to a hammer. Work on a blanket to prevent your floor and furniture from getting dirty and scratched. Get a friend to give you a hand if you can (four are better than two)!
